The name of this cereal-based treat likely came from its kibble-like appearance resembling dog food; however, the snack’s ties to dog food actually go a bit further. Although it’s unknown when the first batch of puppy chow was made, Chex cereal first arrived on the market in 1937 made by the Ralston Purina Company of St. Louis, Missouri. The company, which started as a horse-feed company, made dog chow, cat chow, and added Chex cereal. It used the name “chow” for its animal feeds after hearing World War I soldiers call their rations chow. As a result of the growing popularity of puppy chow, the company published its own recipe for this treat, which they called muddy buddies, in 2002. No matter the name, this tasty snack is popular nationwide.

Ingredients
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup peanut butter
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 8 cups rice chex or crispix cereal
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
Directions
- Pour the cereal into a large bowl and set it aside.
- Pour the powdered sugar into a large clean paper or plastic grocery bag (double up to ensure there’s no holes). Set aside.
- Combine the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave uncovered for 1 minute. Stir until smooth. If needed, microwave the mixture for an additional 30 seconds or until mixture can be stirred smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla.
- Pour the mixture over the cereal, gently stirring until evenly coated.
- Pour the cereal into the bag with the powdered sugar, close the bag, and shake it until the cereal is coated in powdered sugar.
- Spread the puppy chow out on waxed paper to cool. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
