Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

The first recipe for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich appeared in 1901 in the Boston Cooking School Magazine of Culinary Science and Domestic Economics written by Julia Davis Chandler. Although it wouldn’t be until years later, with the introduction of creamier peanut butter in 1922 and invention of sliced bread in 1928, that the sandwich would catch on. During the Great Depression of the 1930s families discovered peanut butter was an inexpensive protein, but it wasn’t until after World War II, when peanut butter and jelly were included in soldiers’ rations, that the sandwich became a widely popular item.
