Navajo Mutton Stew

Domesticated sheep were first brought to the American Southwest by Spanish colonists in the 1500s. The first breed to be adopted by the Navajo was the Churro, today a heritage breed that is attempting a comeback. Sheep had a significant impact on the Navajo people, with both wool and meat key items in their culture. A tribe's wealth was counted in the number of sheep owned. Mutton refers to the meat of an adult sheep, with recipes like this mutton stew common among the Navajo. The stew is typically enjoyed with fried bread and coffee.
