Jersey Sloppy Joe

Northern New Jersey is famous for the Jersey Sloppy Joe, but the recipe is a far cry from what you might expect of a sandwich with that name. Legend has it that the mayor of Maplewood, New Jersey, a man named Thomas Sweeney, visited Cuba in the 1930s and had a sandwich at a bar called Sloppy Joe’s. He liked the sandwich so much that he commissioned a local deli in New Jersey to recreate it, and the rest is history.

Ingredients

  • 3 large pieces rye bread, thin sliced
  • 1 Tbsp butter, at room temperature
  • 6 thin slices of deli meats of your choice (such as turkey, ham, roast beef, pastrami, corned beef, and/or sliced beef tongue)
  • 3 slices Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup coleslaw, divided
  • 1–2 Tbsp Russian dressing

Directions

  1. Lay the bread slices on a clean counter top or cutting board.
  2. Spread the butter on both sides of one slice, and only one side of each of the other two slices.
  3. Fit one slice of Swiss cheese onto one slice of a piece of bread that is buttered on one side.
  4. Spoon about half of the coleslaw over the cheese.
  5. Spread some Russian dressing over the coleslaw.
  6. Cover the dressing completely with three slices of deli meats.
  7. Top this with the slice of bread that is buttered on both sides.
  8. Place the other two slices of Swiss cheese on top of the buttered bread.
  9. Spoon remaining coleslaw over the cheese, and the remaining Russian dressing over the coleslaw.
  10. Completely cover the dressing with the remaining three slices of deli meats.
  11. Top with the last bread slice, buttered side down.
  12. Insert toothpicks so the sandwich stays together when you cut it.

Notes

Optional: If desired, you can toast the buttered rye in a skillet.
