Fried Onion Burger

Fried onion burgers were born of America’s Depression era, when cooks found many tasty and creative ways to “stretch” the meat. This classic slider recipe from Oklahoma is characterized by thin burger patties and a heaping helping of fried onions.

Ingredients

  • ¼ tsp canola oil
  • 5 oz ground beef, divided
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • 2 small, soft hamburger buns

Directions

  1. Coat a large skillet with canola oil, using a paper towel.
  2. Heat on high until lightly smoking.
  3. Separate ground beef into two equal parts, and form into balls with your hands.
  4. Add the meatballs to the pan and, using a spatula, flatten each meatball down to a patty.
  5. Season the meat liberally with salt and pepper.
  6. Spread onions over the top of the cooking patties, and press down with a spatula so the onions are embedded in the meat. Let cook for about 2 minutes.
  7. Flip the burgers carefully over with the spatula, and cook the other side for 1–2 minutes.
  8. Put the bottom halves of the burger buns on a plate.
  9. Place cheese on top of meat in pan.
  10. Place the top half of the burger bun onto the meat and cheese.
  11. Cover pan for about 15–30 seconds.
  12. Remove patties from the pan and place them on the bottom halves of the burger buns.

Notes

Optional: Add ketchup, mustard, relish, and/or other condiments. Serve with fries or potato chips.
