Rice Krispies Treats

First called marshmallow squares, Rice Krispies treats were created in 1939 by Malitta Jensen and Mildred Day in the home economics department at Kellogg Company in Battle Creek, Michigan. The women were trying to create a treat to promote the company’s popular Rice Krispies cereal when they decided to mix melted marshmallows with it. Kellogg published its marshmallow squares recipe in 1940 and it appeared on the cereal’s packaging in 1941; however, Kellogg didn’t begin marketing the ready-made treats until 1995.
