This recipe combines two American inventions into one chocolatey, chewy dessert. Brownies were created to be a sweet, packable treat for visitors to take to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. A recipe for brownies appears in the Sears, Roebuck catalog from 1897. It was in 1885 that Dr Pepper was created in Waco, Texas. It was the first soft drink—also called pop or soda—created in the US and was popularized at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. With salt in the mixture and dusted on top, this is a sweet and salty dessert that is uniquely American in origin.
